Overview
The new .asia domain name will cover 73 countries in the Asia/Australia/Pacific region and competition is expected to be fierce with organisations from neighbouring countries all keen to stake their claims to the most popular domain names. In China alone there are over 123 million internet users and over 780,000 registered .cn domain names and as the entire region continues to experience record economic growth, local and western businesses will have to move quickly to secure their Asian brands online, as well as popular generic domain names.
The first Sunrise period, which is already in progress, is for government bodies in the region. The second Sunrise period, scheduled to commence 9 October, will be open to trademark owners.** A third Sunrise period is anticipated to open in November for any company operating in the Asia-Pacific region. All Sunrise applicants will have to give evidence of official registration as a company in the region.
The .asia domain will then go into the so called 'Landrush' phase (pencilled in for February 2008) which will be open to anyone meeting the Charter Eligibility Requirements.*
Important Considerations
Timeframes may be subject to change.
Sunrise and Landrush will not operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Instead, if more than one successfully verified application is received for a domain name, then all successfully verified applicants will be invited to bid for the domain name in an auction process. Further details on exactly how this process will be run will be published in the future.
*At least one of the Domain Contacts associated with each application must be a legal entity in the DotAsia community. NetNames will be able to provide a local presence for all customers who cannot fulfil this requirement.
**At this stage it appears that many types of trademark will be accepted during trademark Sunrise, including those from individual countries and also European Community Trade Marks (CTM) and Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market (OHIM) marks.
