.NRW Specifics

Background of .NRW

NetNames has been given notice that Minds + Machines plan to open the .NRW new Top Level Domain registry on the 16th December 2014. The .NRW gTLD will be supported by Knipps as the back-end provider. The .NRWTLD will be an open registry and will offer the following registration periods:-

Trademark Sunrise16th December 2014 to 14th February 2015✔
General Availability25th February 2015 onwards✔

Minds + Machine will be offering Sunrise registrations to all Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) verified mark holders. Sunrise orders can be placed via your NetNames Domain Management Portal or via your Account Manager. Should you still wish to place any trademarks with the TMCH, please contact your Account Manager.

.NRW Information

Registration Info

  • The .NRW gTLD will be available to any applicant with some restrictions, namely:-
    • Restricted to individuals with residence in the postal code area of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia; or
    • individuals that have place of business in connection with self-employment or freelance work in the postal code area of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia; or
    • entities that have place of business in the postal code area of the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia
  • Registrations can be for 3 to 63 characters
  • .NRW will support IDN registrations in German local script.
  • .NRW is not eligible for blocking under any Domains Protected Marks List (DPML), although may form part of the Minds + Machine MPML product in due course.
  • Applications made in the Trademark Sunrise phase will incur a one-off Sunrise Access fee which will be billed in the next invoice period and is non-refundable.

New gTLD analysis report

With an estimated 600 new commercial Top Level Domains opening for business in the next two years, and with up 20 strings being delegated every week, for most companies, blanket registration of all marks and key generic terms under all extensions is no longer a viable option from a budgetary point of view alone.
