Background of .shabaka

NetNames has been given notice that International Domain Registry Pty. Limited has launched the .shabaka new Top Level Domain registry. The dotshabaka gTLD will be supported by ARI Registry Services as the back-end provider. The gTLD will be an open Arabic IDN-only registry and will offer the following registration periods:-

Trademark Sunrise31st October 2013 to 29th December 2013✔
Landrush Phase2nd January 2014 to 31st January 2014✔
General Availability4th February 2014 onwards✔

The registry will be offering Sunrise registrations to all Arabic IDN Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) verified mark holders. Any valid duplicate applications made during the Sunrise period will be resolved by means of an auction after the close of the phase on the 29th December 2013. Sunrise orders can be placed via your NetNames Domain Management Portal or via your Account Manager. Should you wish to place any trademarks with the TMCH, please contact your Account Manager.

The registry will be offering a traditional 30 day Landrush application period for Arabic IDN non-TMCH registrants. This phase allows registrations on a first-come, first-serve basis of any strings not registered during the Sunrise phase.

Registration Info

  • The gTLD will be available to any IDN applicant without restriction
  • Registrations can be for 3 to 63 characters – Native characters. Puny code is longer by virtue: xn— and are for an initial registration period of 2 years
  • Claims period runs from 2 January 2014 at 00:00 UTC to 4 April 2014 at 23:59 UTC
  • dotshabaka will support only Arabic IDN registrations although ASCII numbers can be used within the script.
  • The registry will be providing a list of premium and reserved domain names in due course
  • Applications made in the Trademark Sunrise and Landrush phases will incur a one-off non-refundable Sunrise Access fee
