.WALES Specifics

Background of .WALES

NetNames has been given notice that Nominet plan to open the .WALES new Top Level Domain registry on the 1st September 2014. The .WALES gTLD will be also be supported by Nominet as the back-end provider. The .WALES TLD will be an open registry and will offer the following registration periods:-

Welsh Business Priority3rd November 2014 to 24th December 2014✔
Landrush Phase29th December 2014 to 25th February 2015✔
General Availability1st March 2015 onwards✔
Nominet will be offering Sunrise registrations to all Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH) verified mark holders. If more than one application is validated for the same domain name during this phase, the applicants will be invited to submit evidence to Nominet’s chosen validation agent, illustrating how their eligible trade mark has been used in Wales. If only one applicant is able to prove that their eligible trademark has been used in Wales then they will be able to register the domain name. If there is more than one applicant and neither applicant can prove that their eligible trademark has been used in Wales then it will be registered following the outcome of an auction. If more than one applicant can prove that their eligible trademark has been used in Wales then it will be registered following the outcome of an auction. Sunrise orders can be placed via your NetNames Domain Management Portal or via your Account Manager. Should you still wish to place any trademarks with the TMCH, please contact your Account Manager.   The Welsh business priority phase will allow holders of eligible rights to apply for their corresponding domain names, where the domain name was not registered during the registered rights sunrise. Proof that the eligible right is in use in Wales is mandatory during this phase and all applicants will be invited to provide documentary evidence to the Validation agent. The validation agent working on behalf of Nominet will validate the documentary evidence of this use to prove that the applicant has an eligible right in Wales.

.WALES Information

Registration Info

  • The .WALES gTLD will be available to any applicant without restriction
  • Registrations can be for 3 to 63 characters
  • .WALES will support IDN registrations in both ASCII and Welsh language diacritic characters.
  • .WALES is not eligible for blocking under the Donuts Domains Protected Marks List (DPML)
  • Applications made in the Trademark Sunrise or Landrush phase will incur a one-off Sunrise Access fee which will be billed in the next invoice period and is non-refundable.
