.xxx TLD available soon

According to research produced by ICANN, around 100,000 individuals, businesses and entities make up the adult-entertainment industry, and on average each of these manages around 10-20 domains.

Many of these entities and individuals have so far existed independently and in isolation from one another, which has led to the lack of an online community and responsible practices. As far back a 2000 ICM registry proposed the creation of a .xxx TLD, which was finally ratified by ICANN in 2011.

The Sunrise phase for applications will open as early as Wednesday 7 September 2011. The phase will last for 30 days, followed by a 14 day Landrush period.

The Sunrise phase will be split into two sections:

  • Sunrise A: for members of the sponsored community with verifiable trademark rights and/or owners of exact match strings in other IANA TLDs
  • Sunrise B: for non-members of the sponsored community with verifiable trademark rights who wish to block the use of their name alongside.xxx suffixes
